Rocío Pozo

Flamenco dancer, choreographer, director and teacher of Spanish dance and flamenco.

I am Rocío Pozo. I have spent more than 30 years devoted to Spanish dance and flamenco.

My training began in Madrid, where I earned the degree in Spanish Dance from the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza de Madrid. I later specialised in Flamenco at the Cátedra de Flamencología in Jerez.

I began my professional career with the Ballet Español de María Rosa and, since then, I have built my work as a performer, choreographer, teacher and director.

In 1994 I founded my dance school in Telde, Gran Canaria. Teaching has been part of my professional path — and of the way I understand dance — ever since.

In 2016 I founded Compañía Flamenca Rocío Pozo, through which I develop my own stage productions and creative projects.

My own way of understanding flamenco

My work rests on three pillars: training, experience and creation.

Training has given me the technique and the knowledge of Spanish dance and flamenco.

The years on stage have given me the craft: working with musicians, building characters, understanding the stage space and turning an idea into a show.

And creation lets me research and find new ways of bringing flamenco to the stage.

That is why my shows do not always follow the same formula. Each production starts from a different idea and develops its own language, drawing on flamenco, contemporary dance, theatre and music whenever the project calls for it.
